The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said on 24 September 2026 that the Louisiana Transportation Authority had approved a service contract, negotiated by the department and LabMar Ferry Services, for the privatization of the operations and maintenance of the Cameron ferry. The department’s notice is timed 2:36:36 pm that day.

LabMar, based in New Orleans, will assume control from the department of the entire ferry service, including the existing and new ferry boats and the terminals. The department said there is a planned 60-day transition, during which it will work with LabMar on the handover. LabMar is committed to retaining department employees on staff, with additional staffing at other ferries available for assistance.

Governor Jeff Landry said: “The people of Cameron Parish have waited long enough.” He said bringing in a company like LabMar, with extensive maritime experience, “will create a more reliable and efficient system for the people and businesses who depend on this ferry every day.”

DOTD secretary Glenn Ledet said handing control to LabMar “will provide those who use and rely on the ferry daily with peace of mind that it will operate as intended.”

State representative Ryan Bourriaque, chairman of the Louisiana Transportation Authority, said the department had operated the crossing for over 60 years. He said the partnership with LabMar, coupled with delivery of the new Holly Beach, is hoped to bring increased reliability for the region.
