Baleària plans to launch the first of two fully electric fast ferries for its Tarifa–Tangier Ville route on 23 October at Armón's shipyard in Gijón. The 87-metre catamaran is due to start service in summer 2027, with its sister to follow. The project, worth more than €200 million, also electrifies the ports at both ends. Each port will have two automated robotic charging arms delivering up to 16 MW, recharging the batteries in about 40 minutes. The batteries are sized to cover the full 18-nautical-mile crossing on electric power. Because both hulls are being built together in a dry dock that holds only one and a half ships, the part-built second hull must be secured and floated during the launch.
