Käringötrafiken awarded Waxholmsbolaget traffic in Stockholm's northern archipelago

Waxholmsbolaget said on 5 October 2026 that the director of Trafikförvaltningen decided that day to award procurement E52A, for archipelago traffic in Stockholm's northern archipelago, to Käringötrafiken AB. The contract runs for ten years with no option to extend, and has an estimated value of about 650 million kronor. Traffic is planned to start in April 2028.

The area covers lines 25, 28, 30 and 31 and the northern part of line 40. That is traffic from Arholma to Furusund, and the northernmost part of line 40 from Norrtälje to Sandhamn and Stavsnäs. The contract is a whole undertaking that includes producing the traffic, planning it, informing passengers, and maintaining Waxholmsbolaget's ships in the area. Payment combines production and incentives.

Käringötrafiken and Blidösundsbolaget both submitted bids, and both met the minimum requirements. The bids were assessed on price and quality. The quality assessment included preparations for the start of traffic, the customer experience, the quality of the traffic and services, and solutions for IT and information security.

Erik Norling, director of Trafikförvaltningen and chief executive of Waxholmsbolaget, said archipelago traffic matters to residents, businesses and visitors, and that the contract should provide stable traffic and continued development of the service for passengers. The award can be appealed to the Administrative Court until 15 October 2026.
