SCA Logistics cuts RoRo departures and speed to lower emissions

From 1 October 2026 SCA Logistics runs two weekly RoRo departures from Umeå instead of three, slows ships to 11–12 knots, extends calls to Piteå, and shifts Benelux calls to Vlissingen, aiming to cut emissions per tonne-kilometre by about 40%.

On 1 October 2026 SCA Logistics introduced a new RoRo set-up intended to cut emissions and raise vessel load factors. Where three RoRo vessels previously left Umeå each week — two to Kiel and one to London and Rotterdam — the new timetable has two departures a week, one on each route.

Average speed can fall from about 15 knots to 11–12 knots. Combined with higher load factors, especially northbound, Magnus Svensson, President of SCA Sourcing and Logistics, said the change should cut emissions per tonne-kilometre by around 40%.

Freed timetable time lets vessels that previously only called at Umeå continue north to the Port of Piteå at Haraholmen, where cargo from SCA’s Munksund paper mill is loaded and recovered fibre and other cargo are unloaded.

Vessels carrying kraftliner and pulp to Western and Central Europe now call at Terminal Vlissingen instead of Rotterdam, for both RoRo and additional bulk ships. Svensson said the shorter approach to Vlissingen can save a couple of hours per voyage and should support delivery reliability as well as emissions cuts.
