Grimaldi Group presented a new vertical car park and photovoltaic plant at Grimaldi Terminal Barcelona on 13 October 2026. The multi-storey facility can hold 2,000 vehicles and will connect directly to the rail terminal at the Costa quay, speeding up handling of cars arriving by train. Its roof carries about 6,000 m² of solar panels for the terminal’s own use.
The car silo is due to enter service in November 2026. It stands on a footprint of roughly 7,500 m² with a ground floor plus four upper levels, giving about 37,500 m² of floor area. Miguel Pardo, Director of Institutional Relations for Grimaldi Group in Spain, said the link to the Costa quay rail terminal shortens the distance new vehicles have to travel after arrival by train.
Since the concession was awarded in 2012, Grimaldi has invested about EUR 45 million in the terminal, including the new facilities, with a further EUR 5 million going into modernising access routes, automating gates, and upgrading paving and infrastructure. Mario Massarotti, CEO of Grimaldi Lines Spain, said the silo helps make better use of limited port space and prepare the terminal for growing car traffic, including Chinese-built vehicles entering the European market.
The photovoltaic installation is rated at 1,238 kWp with an estimated annual output of 1,695 MWh, roughly matching the terminal’s annual energy use. A 1.3 MWh battery is already installed and awaiting management software. The system is designed for self-consumption without export to the grid.
