CAT Ferry ends 2026 season with no contract yet for 2027

The Bar Harbor–Yarmouth CAT Ferry closed its 2026 season on 14 October without a deal for 2027; Nova Scotia is still negotiating with the US government over the US Navy–owned vessel, and the public works minister said operating next year remains the hope.

Acadia News reported on 15 October 2026 that the CAT Ferry’s future is in question after the 2026 season closed on 14 October. The service runs between Bar Harbor, Maine, and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and is operated by Bay Ferries Limited.

Bay Ferries data cited in the report said 2026 was one of the more successful recent seasons, with most customers American tourists travelling to Nova Scotia.

Negotiations involve the province of Nova Scotia and the United States government because the ship used for the service is owned by the United States Navy. Premier Tim Houston previously said negotiations with the US government had become difficult, while affirming that Nova Scotia sees the value of the service.

In a press conference on 15 October, Public Works Minister Fred Tilley said having the CAT operating next year was “the hope,” without detailing points of contention. Asked about the province acquiring and operating the ferry itself, Tilley said the best solution for Nova Scotians would be a Nova Scotian crew and that “everything is on the table.”
