The Otago Daily Times reported on Friday, 25 September 2026, that Interislander ferry Kaitaki returns to service on Saturday after maintenance in Singapore.
KiwiRail said the work was needed for the safety, reliability and performance of the ship until new ferries arrive in 2029. Chief operations officer Duncan Roy said it was done in winter to limit the effect on passengers and freight customers, and to have the ships ready for a busy summer. Kaitaki's return lets Interislander resume a two-ship timetable.
The Wellington to Picton morning sailing will depart at 8.30am instead of 8.45am. The Picton to Wellington sailing will depart at 2pm instead of 2.15pm. KiwiRail said the change is meant to support more reliable operations and improve connections with the Coastal Pacific train.
Roy said the company was looking forward to welcoming passengers and helping people reach friends, family and holiday destinations across Aotearoa. Customers were advised to book early for school holidays, Christmas and New Year sailings.
