The Port of Barcelona and grid operator Red Eléctrica are moving ahead with a high-voltage connection between Red Eléctrica's Cerdà substation and the port's own substation. Through the link, Barcelona has been allocated 80 MW of transmission capacity to electrify its main quays under the Nexigen onshore power supply plan. The port substation is expected to be working in early 2027, when the port's first shore power installation, at a cruise terminal, can start. Red Eléctrica finished a €37 million expansion of the 220 kV Cerdà substation this summer. The port says more power will also be needed for planned projects including a green methanol plant for shipping fuel and hydrogen infrastructure.
