VOI, quoting Antara, reported on 22 October 2026 that PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry is preparing to lift KMP Batumandi after the ferry sank in the waters around Merak Port. President director Heru Widodo said the handling had been under way with the authorities since the incident on Wednesday, 21 October.
Antara's report of Thursday, 22 October, timed 11:42 WIB, quotes Heru as saying the company moved to handle KMP Batumandi in the waters around Merak on Wednesday night. Marker buoys were installed on Wednesday afternoon around the area of the sunken ship. An oil boom was put in place to limit the spread of oil on the surface. A salvage team was scheduled to arrive in Merak on Thursday at about 10.00 WIB. The ship is to be returned to a normal position before it is moved to a shipyard.
VOI says ASDP has not given an exact schedule for the removal, has not detailed the cause of the sinking, and has not said whether oil has spilled.
