The Grey Nomads reported on 27 October 2026 that the first of the two new Kangaroo Island ferries went into service that morning, leaving Penneshaw for the approximately 45-minute journey to Cape Jervis. A SeaLink spokesperson said Wanggami left at 5.30am and that it was smooth sailing.

The vessel is 60 metres long and 20 metres wide, approximately 10 metres longer and two metres wider than the current ferries, providing 150m more vehicle lane length. Ruwi will be identical in design when it arrives. Both feature eight vehicle lanes, with drive-through in the same direction.

SeaLink South Australia general manager Tracy Croft said: "Our ferry service is an essential connection for Kangaroo Island, supporting residents, businesses, freight operators and visitors every day." She said the new vessels will strengthen that service through greater operational flexibility, more daily sailings and a modern and more comfortable and accessible journey.
