Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias confirmed on Thursday that the government intends to introduce additional support so Greek ferry companies can cope with the higher cost of marine fuel. eKathimerini reported on 30 October 2026 that the government intends to introduce additional support measures to help Greece’s ferry companies cope with the higher cost of marine fuel. Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias confirmed that on Thursday.
“The Greek government will again support Greek coastal shipping,” he said. He described it as a means of public transport serving working-class people and the vital needs of island regions.
He said the government has decided to intervene again to support ferry companies, for the movement of people and goods and for the islands’ economic activity. There have already been contacts with ferry line representatives. Details of the plan will be announced in the next few days. The minister avoided revealing the size and form this support will take, and said these will be announced once the processing of the measures has been completed.
On a previous intervention to keep ferry prices down, he said they had succeeded in containing hikes in ferry fares to 15%, which the sector had announced were pending. He linked the new initiative with the effects of the global energy crisis due to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
