Shippax reported on 5 November 2026 that Toremar is set to continue ferry services to the Tuscan Archipelago under a new contract that the Tuscany regional government aims to bring into force on 1 January 2027.
The incumbent was the sole bidder. The tender was published in June 2025, with bids due by 18 December. The evaluation committee has recommended awarding Toremar the contract, and the required procurement checks have been completed successfully.
The final award remains pending while the regional government assesses the fuel cost component after the sharp rise in prices since bidding closed. Shippax reported that the Iranian crisis and tensions in the Middle East have significantly altered the economic assumptions underlying Toremar’s bid. The regional government stressed that it is applying adjustment mechanisms already included in the tender documents. It is also considering additional funding to cover higher costs in 2027 and 2028.
The concession has an estimated total value of EUR 789 million, including anticipated ticket revenue. The regional subsidy totals approximately EUR 192.7 million, equivalent to around EUR 16 million annually excluding VAT. Discounted fares for residents are to be preserved, and the regional government is also seeking to prevent service reductions.
